Having seen its first release on the PlayStation way back in the last century, 1997 to be exact, the Armored Core series is now one of the longest running giant mech games video games on the market. With well over a dozen titles under its belt, including one previously on the Xbox 360 (last year’s Armored Core 4), Armored Core is also one of the most popular games to put you at the controls of a giant metal anthropomorphic warrior.
So it was good news when new publisher Ubisoft announced a couple weeks ago that the previously only available in Japan Armored Core For Answer would be getting a North American release this September. The sequel to Armored Core 4 promises to be bigger, badder and more in English than ever before.
Taking place 10 years after the events of Armored Core 4, Armored Core For Answer features a number of enhancements to the tried and true gameplay of the series, in addition to some really significant enhancements to the mech customization feature, a hallmark of the series. But we’re going to bring you more details on the new customizations later this week on TeamXbox. Stay tuned for that.
Like I said, the story takes place a decade later and the planet is sagging environmentally due to the overdevelopment of society and the out of control population that comes hand in hand with that. Those to blame are a federation of corporations called The League, who are using their wealth and military power to suppress the human resistance trying to put up a fight against the imposing doom for the planet. They’re called The ORCA, and they’re forced to live on the polluted surface of the planet while The League lives high above the killer smog in their floating “rich jerks” ships. The ORCA are hardly just some scrappy rag tag band of rebels though; they’ve amassed quite an arsenal in their own right. The war between them will be large and bloody.
So where do you fit in. In classic video game style you play a mercenary, fighting for whomever you please or whoever pays the most. You have a pretty decent arsenal at your own disposal as well, as well as the ability to modify and upgrade to your little heart’s content. You can fight for The League, The ORCA or a series of independent city-states with a stake in the planet’s future. Each has their own unique equipment either at your disposal or turned against you in battle, as well as their own unique style. Switching factions will actually change the storyline, and you can unlock one of three different endings when you finish the game.
In classic Armored Core style, you tool around in your giant mech fighting other giant mechs, but you’ll also be fighting outright colossal enemy military vehicles. Like ginormous, if you know what I mean. It’s a good thing then that they added a unique feature new to the Armored Core series – the ability to cut your way inside these behemoths and destroy them from the inside out. It sounds a bit like Shadow of the Colossus, but with more metal and more evisceration. There are ten types of colossal vehicle to destroy, and huge expansive levels in which to fight them. Good, it sounds like you’re going to need some room.
The environments promise to look really awesome too. Featuring a day/night cycle, weather effects and destructibility, your arenas of play sound like the perfect place to get some serious battles going. The forty some odd maps should offer gamers plenty of variety too as far as scenery goes, featuring snowy fields, deserts, oceans, underground lairs and urban areas as well. Hopefully that will correct some of the sameness to the levels that held back Armored Core 4 a bit.
Armored Core For Answer should give fans of the giant mech series everything they need in a game like that, especially since the game supports two player co-op and up to eight player multiplayer over Live.
